This large fly was resting on our backyard lemon tree, one of many interesting inverts i've yet to encounter thanks to this tree. Slowly approaching the fly, patience paid off as it allowed me to take this photo handheld in natural light, no zoom or flash!

A Yellow Admiral Butterfly
Vanessa itea visited our garden, spending a moment resting on our concrete path. Normally too fast or far away to get a clear photo, this large butterfly allows me to cheat the odds again getting being so close with only 5mp and 3x optical zoom!

There are some times when luck is on your side, I cheated the odds for a begginer taking this detailed shot of what I had thought to be a small native bee at the time with my 5mp point and shoot panasonic camera. Months of curiosity later paid off when finding an ID. Not a bee at all but actually a fly! A hover fly, toxomerus sp. Which seemed to enjoy the pollen of this cactus flower in our shade house.
